Atwater, Helen Woodard

Atwater, Helen Woodard

(1876–1947) home economist; born in Somerville, Mass. (daughter of Wilbur Olin Atwater). After graduating from Smith College she assisted her father in his seminal calometric research. She joined the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Office of Home Economics to publicize new findings on nutrition and food preparation to rural women (1909–23), and edited the Journal of Home Economics (1923–41).
