(pseudonym of G. Vasiliu). Born Sept. 4, 1881, in Bacău; died May 22, 1957, in Bucharest. Rumanian symbolist poet.
Bacovia’s work reflects the rebellion of the individual against the capitalist system; at times it borders on a class protest of the growing Rumanian proletariat. However, he remained essentially a poet of personal experiences; the description of the gray and meaningless existence in the bourgeois city in his poems reaches heights of lyrical generalization (collections of poems Lead, 1916; Bourgeois Stanzas, 1946; and others).
