Badeau, John S. (Stothoff)
(1903– ) educator, diplomat; born in Pittsburgh, Pa. He became a minister of the Reformed Church of America in 1928 and did civil and sanitary engineering missionary work in Iraq (1928–35). He was a professor of religion (1936–38), dean of the faculty (1938–44) and president (1945–53) of the American University of Cairo. He was ambassador to Egypt (1961–64) and director of the Middle East Institute at Columbia (1964–71). He wrote The American Approach to the Arab World (1968).
