It is located on the Chulym River (a tributary of the Ob’), 124 km east of the Uzhur railroad station (on the Achinsk-Abakan line). Population in 1968, 8,500. Balakhta’s industry includes a creamery, motor transport enterprises, and a mechanized land-reclamation station.
