Baldwin, Evelyn Briggs
(1862–1933) Arctic explorer; born in Springfield, Mo. He was the superintendent of city schools in Kansas (1887–91) and an observer for the U.S. Weather Bureau (1892–1900). He made a daring but unsuccessful attempt to reach the North Pole (1901–02). He served in minor government posts (1918–33). He was nearly destitute at the time of his death in an auto accident in Washington, D.C.
