Baranovskii, Vladimir Stepanovich

 

Born Sept. 1 (13), 1846, in Helsinki; died Mar. 7 (19), 1879, in St. Petersburg. Russian inventor and builder of artillery systems.

In 1872–75, Baranovskii constructed a 2.5-inch (63.5-mm) rapid-firing gun with a fixed round, which was adopted in 1877 as a weapon for the Russian Army. He created a machine for assembling fixed rounds that was widely used. He was the first to apply to artillery systems a recoilless gun carriage, a piston breech with a self-cocking firing pin, a safety catch, a telescopic sight, and other innovations. Baranovskii is famous for inventions in other branches of technology, including a water-discharge machine to be used in gold fields and a hydraulic hose. Baranovskii died while testing a sample cartridge for a gun.
