Bathyergidae

A family of mammals, including the South African mole rats, in the order Rodentia.

Within Phiomorpha, the ~31 Ma divergence of the naked mole-rat (Heterocephalus) from all other mole-rats argues for recognition of this group as Bathyergoidea, containing the families Heterocephalidae and Bathyergidae. Within Caviomorpha, the 4 traditional superfamilies were recovered with ~32 Ma stem divergences as Cavioidea + Erethizontoidea and Chinchilloidea + Octodontoidea.
In these groups, some individuals, generally females, more or less temporarily (marmosets and tamarins: Cebidae, Primates) or more or less permanently (naked mole rats: Bathyergidae, Rodentia) delay individual (selfish) reproduction to assist dominant group members rear one or more offspring who are usually the helper's kin.
