The lack of freshwater Rhodophyta in the streams of the four drainage basins examined here is atypical of much of the North American tundra (Sheath et al., 1996), and we have found the red alga
Batrachospermum gelatinosum (L.) DC.
Periphyton communities were dominated by diatoms both before and after removal of Glossosoma, although short-term dominance by filamentous or other macroalgae, especially
Batrachospermum, has been observed when Glossosoma collapse took place in winter.
