Mental Development of the Children was assessed on the
Bayley Scales of Infant Development and their language expression and comprehension by mothers' report.
Language items were based on existing milestone measures, namely the Developmental Milestones Checklist II, (4) and new cognitive items were generated from the
Bayley Scales of Infant Development. (13) It took approximately 10 minutes to administer to the mother.
Methods: We performed the Amiel-Tison neurologic evaluation at discharge and the
Bayley Scales of Infant Development from 3 to 24 months.
Developmental outcome was then assessed for both groups at 24 months' corrected age using the
Bayley Scales of Infant Development 2nd Edition (BSID-II) [10].
The cognitive function delay were measured by psychologist with neuropsychological tests with Leiter International Performance Scale, Revised (Leiter-R),
Bayley Scales of Infant Development. Speech DD indicated a deficit in articulation function, verbal expression, comprehension, or the mixtures of the above conditions.
BSID-II:
Bayley Scales of infant development. Second edition.
It is based on the
Bayley Scales of Infant Development and is composed of 54 items (22 focus on motor and 32 on mental development).
Developmental outcomes were assessed using 2 different tools when infants reached 12 months of age: (1) the
Bayley Scales of Infant Development (BSID-III), which includes measures of cognitive, language, and motor skills, and (2) the Infant-Toddler Social and Emotional Assessment (ITSEA), which evaluates competence (compliance, attention, peer relations), internalizing (anxiety, depression/withdrawal), and externalizing (activity, aggression).
The
Bayley Scales of Infant Development (Bayley), a tool designed and normed in the USA and considered to be the gold standard in infant assessment, [1] needs to be evaluated for validity in the SA population.
Children under 2.5 years are assessed with the
Bayley Scales of Infant Development [16], while children 2.5 years and over are assessed using the Wechsler Preschool and Primary Scale of Intelligence (WPPSI IV) [17].
A follow-up study at 18 months had shown no differences between the two formula groups as a whole on scores on the
Bayley Scales of Infant Development (BSID); supplemented boys, however, showed higher BSID Mental Development index scores than the control-formula group; the girls' scores did not differ between groups.
