Beating-up

 

in weaving, the movement of the weft threads over the warp toward the edge of the fabric. Beating-up is one of the basic operations in the production of fabric on a loom. The most widely used working unit for this process is the reed, which moves the weft along the entire width of the warp. On some looms, beating-up is accomplished with devices that press and compact the weft (circular looms) or with disks (on looms with multiple sheds).
