Navy's advanced tethered vehicle (ATV dive #118) and found a persistent community composed of filamentous sulfur bacteria (
Beggiatoa sp.), vesicomyid clams (Vesicomya/Calyptogena spp.), mytilids (Idas sp.), limpets (Pyropelta spp., Cocculina sp.), snails (Mitrella sp.), and polynoid polychaetes (Bathykurila sp.).
What causes
Beggiatoa to migrate downward after sunrise?
Autotrophic sulfide-oxidizing bacteria of the genus
Beggiatoa (Nelson et al, 1989) that grow in dense mats on the sediment surface assimilate [CO.sub.2] from seawater and sediments; the latter [CO.sub.2] pool includes contributions from sulfate reduction and methane oxidation.
Phylogenetic relationships of a large marine
Beggiatoa. Syst.
Massive natural occurrence of unusually large bacteria (
Beggiatoa sp.) at a hydrothermal deep-sea vent site.
The cuttings contained high hydrocarbon concentrations and were anoxic with a surface mat of
Beggiatoa. Surprisingly, there was no [H.sub.2]S odor either at the surface or within the cuttings pile.

Beggiatoa sp.
Several strains of sulfur bacteria, such as
Beggiatoa and Thiothrix have been detected in wastewater.
The primary producers are chemolithotrophic bacteria, both aerobic (
Beggiatoa) and anaerobic, that oxidize the hydrogen sulphide in the water and use the energy obtained to fix carbon.
Thiothrix and
Beggiatoa participated in the creation of Cesspool cave, Virginia, through sulphur oxidation.
