Bel’bek

 

a river in the Crimea. It is 55 km long and drains a basin of 505 sq km. It rises on a northwestern slope of the main ridge of the Crimean Mountains and flows into the Black Sea 5 km north of Sevastopol’ Bay. The Bel’bek is the most copious river in the Crimea, with an average year-round discharge of 2.7 cubic m per sec. From July to September it usually dries out. Orchards grow in the valley.

BELBEK, Crimea (Reuters) - More than a dozen SU-27 and SU-30 fighter jets which Russia is deploying to boost its air force, amid heightened tensions with Ukraine, arrived in Crimea on Saturday.

Over the weekend, Russian troops stormed the Belbek air force base near Sevastopol and detained the commander.
Mr Mamchur is the commander of the Belbek Air Force base near Sevastopol, which was taken over on Saturday by forces who sent armoured personnel carriers smashing through the base's walls and fired shots and stun grenades.
Elite Russian troops firing into the air and backed by armoured vehicles had on Saturday stormed Ukraine's Belbek airbase in Crimea after earlier taking other bases as well as naval vessels.
Mamchur commanded the Belbek air force base near Sevastopol.
