Beloiarskii

 

urban-type settlement and administrative center of Beloiarskii Raion of Sverdlovsk Oblast, RSFSR. Situated on the Pyshma River (a tributary of the Tura). There is a railroad station (Bazhenovo) 60 km east of Sverdlovsk. Population, 12,000 (1968). There is an asbestos-cardboard factory, an experimental instruments enterprise, and a reinforced-concrete structures and parts production plant. The settlement was established at the end of the 17th century as a sloboda (trade and craft village). Near Beloiarskii (in the settlement of Zarechnyi) is located the I. V. Kurchatov Beloiarskii Atomic Power Plant.
