Bender, Charles

Bender, (Charles Albert) “Chief”

(1884–1954) baseball player; born in Crow Wing County, Minn. A Chippewa Indian, he won 210 games during his 16-year career as a right-handed pitcher (1903–25), mostly with the Philadelphia Athletics. He pitched two no-hitters. He was elected to the Hall of Fame in 1953.
