Benedek, Therese

Benedek, Therese (b. Friedmann)

(1892–1977) psychoanalyst, author; born in Eger, Hungary. She studied at the University of Budapest (M.D. 1916) and taught pediatrics in Poszony. Her marriage to Tibor Benedek in 1919 took her to Leipzig, Germany, where she became a psychoanalyst and developed a lifelong interest in the psychology of women. She came to the United States in 1936 and joined the Chicago Institute of Psychoanalysis (to 1970). She published five important books, including Psychosexual Functions in Women (1952).
