Berengarius of Tours

 

Born circa 1000; died 1088. French philosopher and theologian; representative of early scholasticism.

Berengarius headed the school of Tours, the most famous school in France. He denied the reality of universals and considered an appeal to reason superior to the authority of the church. Polemicizing with the scholastic realist Lanfranc in his work On the Holy Supper (1049), Berengarius treated the church doctrine of the sacrament of the Eucharist rationalistically. The work was repeatedly condemned as heresy by the church.
