Bermejo

 

a river in South America, primarily in northern Argentina; a right tributary of the Paraguay River. The Bermejo is approximately 1,600 km long and drains an area of 133,000 sq km. It originates in Bolivia, on the eastern slopes of the central Andes, and flows for approximately 100 km in the foothills. It then flows over the Gran Chaco in a shifting channel. It branches out into arms but has no tributaries. The middle course flows in the channel of the Bermejo’s former tributary, the Teuco, for approximately 400 km. There are sharp fluctuations in the flow rate, with violent summer flash floods during the rainy season. The mean flow rate where the river emerges from the mountains is 340 cu m per sec. The Bermejo is navigable for small vessels to the city of Presidencia Roque Sáenz Peña.
