Szemere, Bertalan

 

Born Aug. 27, 1812, in Vattán; died Jan. 18, 1869, in Pest. Hungarian political and state figure.

From April to September 1848, Szemere was minister of home affairs in the government of L. Batthyány. In August 1848 he became a member of the Committee for the Defense of the Homeland. Serving as prime minister from May to September 1849, he opposed the left wing of the Hungarian National Assembly and L. Kossuth. After the suppression of the Revolution of 1848–49, Szemere emigrated to Turkey and subsequently to France and Great Britain. He returned to Hungary in 1865.
