Born Dec. 16 (29), 1905, in Oredezh station, in present-day Luga Raion, Leningrad Oblast. Soviet literary scholar.
Bialyi graduated from Leningrad University in 1925 and became a professor there in 1939. Bialyi’s books are devoted to the creative work of V. M. Garshin (V. M. Garshin and the Literary Conflict of the 1880’s, 1937) and I. S. Turgenev (Turgenev and Russian Realism, 1962). He is also the author of articles on G. I. Uspenskii, V. G. Korolenko, and A. P. Chekhov and on general problems connected with 19th-century literary history.
