Bienville, Jean Baptiste le Moyne, Sieur de
(1680–1768) explorer, governor; born in Montreal, French Canada. He entered the French navy at age 12 and spent most of his life in the king's service as an explorer and colonial administrator. He founded Mobile, Ala., (1710) and New Orleans (1718) and was the governor of French Louisiana (1701–13, 1717–24, 1733–43). Worn out from Indian wars, he resigned and went to Paris.
