Big River State Forest
Location:Western Illinois, in Henderson County, 6 miles north of Oquawka on the Oquawka-Keithsburg blacktop.
Facilities:Tent and trailer campsites (primitive), equestrian campground, horse
rentals, picnic areas, shelters, 3 boat ramps, hiking trail, horseback
riding trails, snowmobile trails, scenic roadways.
Activities:Camping (including equestrian and group camping), boating, fishing, ice
fishing, hiking, horseback riding, hunting, snowmobiling.
Special Features:Forest is managed primarily to demonstrate sound forestry practices. A
prominent landmark in the forest is its fire tower. In addition, to
separate the forest into manageable components, 60 miles of firebreaks
interlace Big River State Forest. When fires aren't a threat, hikers
and horseback riders use the firebreaks as trails.
