Bima-Sumba

 

a group of peoples of Indonesia settled on islands of central and eastern Sumbawa (the Bima), Sumba (the Sumba), western and central Flores (Manggarai, Ngada, Lio, and others), and Savu. Total population, 1,650,000 (1965 estimate). They speak languages of the Bima-Sumba group of Indonesian languages. Their religion is Islam with strong vestiges of animism. Their occupations are farming, livestock raising (including horse breeding for export), and fishing. The crafts of weaving, making of wicker, and metal-working are developed.
