On the southeastern border of SD, west of Sioux Falls; original county; organized Apr 5, 1862 (prior to statehood) from unorganized territory. Name Origin: For a village, which was named for a nearby large island in the Missouri River; mentioned in Lewis and Clark's journals. French 'good man,' name used by fourteenth-century French aristocracy for peasants
