Boris Berzins

The following article is from The Great Soviet Encyclopedia (1979). It might be outdated or ideologically biased.

Berziņs, Boris Avgustovich

Born Oct. 7, 1930, in Riga. Soviet painter.

Berzins studied at the Academy of Arts of the Latvian SSR in Riga (1952–59) and joined its staff in 1964. His life-affirming pictures depicting the Latvian kolkhoz countryside (On the Daugava and To the Baths, both painted in 1957, property of the USSR Art Fund; Dinner on the Collective Farm, 1954, property of the Latvian SSR Art Fund) are characterized by courageous, romantic images, dynamic composition, fluid generalization, and restrained greenish ochre tones. A heightened awareness of rhythm and color is emerging in his latest works (Fishing Dock, 1967, for example).
