Bowles, Samuel, III
(1826–78) editor; born in Springfield, Mass. He was the indefatigable longtime editor of the Springfield Republican, which he built into one of the finest papers of the time. His editorials were highly influential; he also published three volumes of correspondence written during travels in the West.
