Braden, Spruille
(1894–1978) diplomat, consultant; born in Elkhorn, Mont. He studied mining engineering at Yale and directed projects in Latin America. He entered the diplomatic service in 1933 and became known as a crusader for democracy, especially while he was ambassador to Argentina (1945) and assistant secretary of state for Latin American affairs (1946–47). He became a consultant to U.S. companies dealing with Latin American countries.
