Bratina

The following article is from The Great Soviet Encyclopedia (1979). It might be outdated or ideologically biased.

Bratina

a Russian globe-shaped vessel for beverages (such as mead and beer) used at communal feasts—for example christenings, and name days—and funeral banquets. Its ceremonial value is often emphasized by a low bottom plate and a cone-shaped lid. Gold and silver bratinas with engraved designs and inscriptions were used in the 16th and 17th centuries, and copper and wooden ones were objects of folk culture from the 16th to the 19th centuries. The bratina has been used as a decorative vessel (prizes, gifts) in the 19th and 20th centuries.
