Brooks, Phillips

Brooks, Phillips

(1835–93) Protestant religious leader; born in Boston, Mass. He graduated from Harvard in 1855, taught briefly, and was ordained an Episcopal minister in 1859. His famous hymn "O Little Town of Bethlehem" was first sung in 1868. From 1869–91 he served as pastor of Trinity Church and he was university preacher at Harvard. His Lectures on Preaching were published in 1877. He died not long after he was consecrated Episcopal bishop of Massachusetts in 1893.
