Burdekin
a river in northeast Australia in the state of Queensland. It is 680 km long and has a basin area of 132,000 sq km. The river rises on the Atherton Tableland and flows through savanna in a wide valley; in its lower course it crosses the Leichhardt Range and empties into the Coral Sea. The mean flow rate is 285 cu m/sec. During the rainy season (from December through March) there are violent flash floods; during the dry season the river becomes nearly dry. There are reservoirs, including one where the Burdekin crosses the Leichhardt Range.
