Burtsov-Protopopov, Vasilii Fedorovich

 

Years of birth and death unknown. Russian printer and publisher. Son of a minor official.

From 1633 to 1642, Burtsov-Protopopov worked at the Moscow Printing House. He was the first in Russia to begin publishing secular books on a mass scale for that time. In 1634 he published A Grammar of the Slavonic Language, or the Beginning of Learning For Children. Genre engravings appeared for the first time in a Moscow publication in the second edition of the Grammar (1637).
