Butenko, Raisa Georgievna

 

Born Sept. 13, 1920, in Belyi, Kalinin Oblast. Soviet biologist. Corresponding member of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR (1974). Butenko graduated from the K. A. Timiriazev Moscow Academy of Agriculture in 1943. Since 1947 she has been working at the K. A. Timiriazev Institute of Plant Physiology, a branch of the Academy of Sciences, where she was appointed laboratory head in 1968.

Butenko’s main works deal with the biology of plant cells cultivated in vitro, morphogenesis in isolated cell culture, and plant tissue.

Butenko has been awarded the Order of the Badge of Honor.
