Last August families, tourists and workers fell to their deaths and 600 people lost homes when the
cable stays broke on the structure.
MILAN: An engineering study commissioned by Italian highway operator Autostrade last year warned about the state of the concrete-encased
cable stays that held up a bridge that collapsed this week in Genoa, two Italian newspapers reported on Friday.
The design includes a net of steel
cable stays that attach to a central reinforced concrete column that will reach into the skies.
The main bridge deck will be made from reinforced concrete and the spans will be supported by steel
cable stays attached to towers rising up to between 80 and 125m above the river bed.
Subsea 7 will permanently repair Siri's damaged subsea structure by installing
cable stays between the platform legs and by securing the caisson through the installation of a support structure connected to the wellhead caisson.
Since a high pretension force exists in inclined
cable stays, the towers and part of the girders are subjected to large compression; this means that the beam-column effect has to be taken into consideration for girders and towers of the cable-stayed bridge.
Right now crews are adjusting the
cable stays and assembling the last two fill sections.
With its graceful
cable stays and two 266-ft-high towers, the new bridge will be a symbol linking the city's future to its historic past.
Maintaining the traffic flow from the existing I-93 to Storrow Drive effected the layout of the
cable stays. It was necessary to move the back-span stay-cable connections to the superstructure from the edge (from the outside similar to the main span) to the center.
Leaded ridges provide ballast, and the structures are further anchored at three points by metal
cable stays running 30m down the outside of the ancient masonry to be fixed to the rock.
Layers of horizontal silk-screened glass slats held in place by
cable stays act as diffusing brises soleils.
