Cahokia Mounds State Historic Site
Location:Between Collinsville and East Saint Louis, off Highway 5570 (8 miles from downtown Saint Louis).

Special Features:Cahokia Mounds preserves the remains of the most sophisticated
prehistoric native civilization north of Mexico. The site was
inhabited from around AD 700-1400 and at its peak covered nearly six
square miles and had a population of as many as 10-20,000 people. The largest of the earthen mounds preserved within the
historic area is Monks Mound, which at 100 feet is the
largest prehistoric earthen mound in the New World. Cahokia Mounds is
recognized as a US Natural Historic Landmark and has also been
designated a World Heritage Site by the United Nations Educational and
Scientific Organization (UNESCO). The site is administered by the Illinois Historic Preservation Agency.
