Callimachos, Panos Demetrios

Callimachos, Panos Demetrios (b. Demetrios Paximadas)

(1879–1963) priest, author; born in Madytos, Dardanelles, Turkey. A Greek Orthodox priest, he was a voluntary chaplain during the Balkan War (1912–13). He came to the U.S.A. (1914) and while serving as a priest in a Greek Orthodox church in Brooklyn, he also edited the Greek National Herald (1915–18, 1922–44). He encouraged Greek-Americans to maintain their Greek heritage in the United States. He opposed the restoration of the Greek monarchy (1935) and denounced the Greek Left at the end of World War II.
