Calvados

a department in northern France, on the English Channel. Area, 5, 700 sq km. Population, 545, 000 (1972). The administrative center is Caen. Economic activities include livestock raising (dairy cattle and horses), the growing of grain and sugar beets, and horticulture. Most of the department’s food industry (butter, cheese, apple cider) and its machine-building industry are concentrated in Caen. There is a fishing industry. Calvados has several sea resorts, including Deauville.
