Camptonite

camptonite

(petrology)
A lamprophyre containing pyroxene, sodic hornblende, and olivine as dark constituents and labradorite as the light constituent; sodic orthoclase may be present.

Camptonite

 

magmatic dike rock consisting of plagioclase (usually labrador) and brown amphibole (barkevikite); it also contains pyroxene (titanaugite), biotite, and olivine. All varieties (amphibole camptonite, biotite camptonite, and others) usually contain a good deal of secondary calcite and zeolite, which either fill amygdules or form irregular secretions.

The age of the Porter Square camptonite has hOt been established with certainty.

In the Montreal area such rocks are mostly alkaline syenite, monzonite, basanite or alkali olivine basalt, and lamprophyre, especially camptonite (Hodgson, 1968; Eby, 1985).
The rock is probably camptonite, which commonly contains phenocrysts of an olivine group mineral.
Serpentine is a common alteration product of olivine in lamprophyric rocks such as camptonite.
