Cape York

the northernmost point of the Australian mainland, in N Queensland on the Torres Strait at the tip of Cape York Peninsula (a peninsula between the Coral Sea and the Gulf of Carpentaria).

Cape York

a peninsula in northeast Australia between the Coral Sea and the Gulf of Carpentaria. Cape York extends more than 600 km from north to south. The eastern part is hilly, with elevations to 555 m, the western part low-lying. There are eucalyptus forests and, in the humid east, evergreen tropical rain forests. Large deposits of bauxites (the Weipa deposit on the shores of the Gulf of Carpentaria) are being exploited, and gold and lead are mined. Port Stewart is the main port.
