Capen, Samuel
Capen, Samuel (Paul)
(1878–1956) educator; born in Somerville, Mass. He was the first director of the American Council on Education (1919–22) before becoming president of the University of Buffalo (1922–50), where he introduced undergraduate tutorials and further strengthened professional programs. He championed high academic standards and was an authority on university planning and administration.
