Shagbark Hickory (Carya ovata) - A member of the walnut family, the older, mature shagbark hickory tree is easily identified by its distinct, light-gray shaggy bark that looks as if it's peeling in long, vertical strips.
Large peeling strips were taken from the bark of Carya ovata, and large flakes were taken from the bark of mature Acer saccharum.
The species include Carya ovata, Comus drummondii, Crataegus mollis, Fraxinus americana, Prunus serotina, Elaeagnus umbellata, and Rosa multiflora.
There is sufficient diversity within the native species shagbark hickory to grow cross compatible trees of the Carya ovata (cross compatible equals able to cross-pollinate and produce nuts) from collected nuts.
