The interval between two sounds whose basic frequency ratio is the twelve-hundredth root of 2; the interval, in cents, between any two frequencies is 1200 times the logarithm to the base 2 of the frequency ratio.

a unit of frequency interval, equal to 1/1,200 of an octave. The ratio of the upper and lower frequencies of an interval corresponding to a cent is equal to the 1,200th root of 2, or 1.006.
