Central Range

(also Taiwan Mountains; in Chinese, Chungyang Shanmo), a mountain range on the island of Taiwan, in China. The range stretches along the length of the island and measures 270 km in length and up to 80 km in width.

The Central Range is composed of limestones and volcanic and crystalline rocks. It consists of four parallel ranges, separated by longitudinal valleys. The highest peak, Yüshan, or Mount Morrison, rises to 3,997 m. The crest zone has an alpine relief, with traces of ancient glaciation. The mountains drop abruptly to the sea in the east. Extinct volcanoes are found in the north, and there are hot springs in all areas of the mountains. On the lower slopes there are subequatorial rain forests, and at higher elevations, broad-leaved and coniferous forests, which in turn give way to shrubs and meadows.
