Chena River State Recreation Area
Location:26 miles east of Fairbanks on Chena Hot Springs Road.
Facilities:73 campsites, 7 cabins, 4 backcountry shelters, picnic sites, picnic
shelters, toilets (é), drinking water, trails, shooting range.
Activities:Camping, fishing, swimming, canoeing, kayaking, hiking, horseback
riding, cross-country skiing, dog sledding, ATV riding, mountain
biking, shoeshowing, snowmobiling, rock climbing, hunting, trapping,
wildlife observation.
Special Features:Park encompasses 397 square miles of forests, rivers, and alpine
tundra, and offers a wide range of recreational activities year round.
The park follows the class II Chena River, with numerous entry and exit
points for canoeing, kayaking, and fishing. Four small ponds have also
been stocked, and fish caught in those can be kept (river fishing is
catch and release only). Wildlife here are abundant; black and grizzly
bears inhabit the area but are seldom seen.
