Chiclayo

a city in northeastern Peru; the capital of Lambayeque Department. Located on the Pan-American Highway. Population, 189,700 (1972).

Chiclayo is connected by railroad with the ports of Pimentel and Puerto Eten. The city’s food-processing industries manufacture dry and condensed milk, sugar, and processed rice. The city also has leather and textile industries and enterprises for the production of building materials. It is the center of an agricultural region that produces rice and sugarcane. A university is located in Chiclayo.
