A family of soil and fresh-water, free-living nematodes in the superfamily Chromadoroidea; generally associated with algal substances.

Boucher y Gourbault (1990) observaron que las asociaciones de nematodos en sedimentos de carbonatas de las Islas Guadeloupe, son dominados por las familias Desmodoridae (33 %) y Xyalidae (21.5 %), seguidos por Chromadoridae, Cyatholaimidae, Ethmolaimidae, Linhomoeidae, Oncholaimidae, Comesomatidae, Selachinematidae y Microlaimidae, que comprendieron el 38.5 % del total.
Tietjen (1991) en Australia, encontro que las familias dominantes fueron: Chromadoridae (15.6 %), Desmodoridae (12.7 %), Comesomatidae (11.6 %), Xyalidae (11.5 %) Linhomoeidae (7.5 %), Cyatholaimidae (6.5 %), Oncholaimidae (6.6 %) mientras que en la Bahia de Chetumal las familias Chromadoridae, Desmodoridae, Etmolaimidae, Linhomoeidae y Xyalidae constituyeron el 76.1 %.
