Circular barn

A barn that has a circular plan; similar to that built by Shakers in Hancock, Massachusetts, in 1826; also called a round barn.

circular barn
A barn having a circular plan; requires less building material than a rectangular barn enclosing the same volume, but usually costs somewhat more to construct. Also called a cylindrical barn or a round barn.

During the 1850s, an itinerant phrenologist evangelized about the virtues of octagonal barns; others promoted round barn construction, leaving Vernon County with ten circular barns that can be seen today.
