In a barrier wall constructed with two wythes of brick (or in composite walls), a
collar joint (grouted solid with mortar) joins face brick with a masonry back-up.
1995 conducted a major research program to test the compressive strength of wallettes constructed with hollow concrete units, with
collar joints and different typing arrangements.
One reason is that
collar joints can be positioned anywhere along the margin between metal and plastic, reportedly providing increased freedom that allows optimal distribution of the plastic.
