Commiphora

a genus of plants of the family Burseraceae. They are usually spiny trees and shrubs. There are approximately 185 species, distributed predominantly in arid tropical regions of Africa and Madagascar; some species are found in Arabia, on Socotra Island, and in India. Many species of Commiphora yield valuable resins, balsams, and gums. The species Commiphora abyssinica is the source of the aromatic resin myrrh. Balm in Gilead is obtained from the species C. opobalsamum. Other Commiphora yield aromatic resins known as bdelliums.
