communications controller
A peripheral control unit that connects several communications lines to a computer and performs the actual transmitting and receiving as well as various message coding and decoding activities.Communications controllers are typically nonprogrammable units designed for specific protocols and communications tasks. Contrast with front end processor, which can be programmed for a variety of protocols and network conditions.
modem pool
A collection of analog modems and software that let users dial out and remote users dial in to the next available modem. The modem pool may be internal or external to the remote access server. See network access server.network access server
A device that functions as an access control point for users in remote locations connecting to a company's internal network or to an ISP. Also called a "media gateway" or a "remote access server" (RAS), a network access server (NAS) may include its own authentication services or rely on a separate authentication server. A NAS may be a dedicated server or a software service within a regular server. See network access control and authentication. |

terminal server
(1) Hardware or software that connects terminals to a host computer. Years ago, a terminal server was part of a mainframe or a stand-alone front end processor attached to the mainframe.(2) A server that supports multiple users at remote PCs or terminals.
