(Siebenbund), an association of seven Swiss cantons (Aargau, Bern, Solothurn, Lucerne, Sankt Gallen, Thurgau, and Zurich) formed on Mar. 17, 1832.
The association, headed by representatives of the liberal Swiss bourgeoisie, advanced a program of moderate reforms, including review of the Federal Pact of 1815, creation of a centralized state, and democratization of the political structure. In 1832 the Swiss Diet drafted a new federal act, which was rejected in 1833 by the majority of economically backward cantons, dominated by clergy opposing centralization. The liberal bourgeois reforms advocated by the association were incorporated in the Constitution of 1848.
