Consedimentation Folding

 

folding occurring simultaneously with the accumulation of sediments in sinking marine and continental basins. Characteristic signs of consedimentation folding are a reduction in the thickness of beds between the synclines and crowns of anticlines and the transition from more abyssal deposits (clay, marl, fine-grained limestone, siliceous rock) to shallower deposits (sand, organic limestone). Consedimentation folding is extensive on platforms and in foredeeps and intermontane troughs of orogenic belts. The term was introduced by the Soviet geologist S. S. ShuPts in 1948.
